After a very cold night on Precipitous Bluff we were keen to get going down where we would be sheltered from the current weather. Well you wold think by the profile that this would be easy – but it is very steep . It starts with some rock scrambling on the vertical columns to get down the first 300m , followed by a walk along the side of the bluff dodging trees . The the track turns south west and it is a steep , muddy descent through enclosed forest dropping a further 800m in a little under 3km . Finally it is flat for the last kilometre on a much more spacious track with the eucalypts widely spaced – finally we could walk ! The columns were spectacular , there were many falls and false turns in the forest but you a finally rewarded with a beautiful campsite beside the lagoon at Cavern Camp , fresh clean water from the river and a wash ! With the change in climate from the drop in altitude and being near the coast thermals were no longer necessary to sleep .
